Gluten Free is not two words that fits into my household. Neither are Vegan or Vegetarians. We are meateaters and love anything made with flour. We have this saying in Afrikaans and translated directly it would sound like: "We look so good, cause we eat so good". That's just the way we grew up, to eating everything and not to be picky.
A few years ago I tried the Gluten Free baking, although my kitchen isn't perfect for Gluten Free baking with all the other flour-baking I do. But I had to try. I thought it would be better for my husband, Riaan's, Diabetes, if he switch to Gluten Free products. But the look on his face when he tried what I made, was of total disbelieve and disgrace. I'm sure he was thinking his wife is going crazy! My problem is that whenever I complain about his weight, he just replies and says that round is also a figure and he is working hard on staying that way. SO, I decided to stop fussing. I just have to love him!
A dear friend of mine asked me two days ago to bake a Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Banana Bread. But I was a bit reluctant to do so. After my previous "Riaan" experience, I'm not sure if that is something that I would like to do. Baking Gluten Free Milktart for work or a Bacon and Onion Quiche was easy and no rocket-science. But a Chocolate Chip Banana Bread? That was a challenge.
This morning I had enough courage and started with a baking-bang. I didn't overthink the recipe, just change the flour and there I go with the rest of the ingredients! It baked for a bit longer than the one I bake weekly for my son, Alwyn, for work, but it looked the same when it came out of the oven and smelled great.
Just now, I received a message from her saying "it was delicious and had a really good flavour. The taste test passed with flying colours!" Oh yeah, I am so grateful it was a success.
Now I decided to add Gluten Free baking to my list of Baking Orders.
