For our love of cooking, we grew up with certain condiments which we just cannot live or cook without. Because we live in Canada, it is not always possible to get these in one of our grocery stores. Therefor it was just easier to start creating my own recipes to make sure I never run out of them. One is for Peach Chutney and the other is for Curry Beet Salad. I make sure that I double up on the ingredients when I make these so that it is always available in my pantry.
The beets are always available in stores, but not big quantities of them. The one evening Riaan and I went to five different stores and bought all there beets for our beet salad. For the peach chutney, it is a bit more difficult to get all the right ingredients. In the beginning we went from store to store to look at different spices. Dried apricots was easy to find at our local store, but oh boy, what a struggle to find clingy peaches. We searches everywhere and eventually we found a local Persian store, Ayoop, where we found the perfect peaches. The store only sells dried fruits and nuts. The containers holding the fruits and nuts and specifically imported and handmade in Iran to fit the beautiful chandeliers in the shop.
The Persian owner asked us what we want to use the peaches for and we said we make Peach Chutney. He knew what is was, because, he said, he lived for 2 years in India and know chutney very well. We promised him a jar to taste it the South African way.
Baie mooi mammie. <3
