It is almost summertime in Vancouver and most of us are trying to lose a few of the past-winter’s pounds. Smoothies are a great way to help you going in the morning, especially if your days looks like mine used to look like. Wake-up, make coffee and school lunches, dress and get kids up and dressed for school, get teeth brushed, and remember to "wash behind the ears". Have you ever seen this video? A funny way to express how busy we are in the mornings before school starts.
Now making a smoothie can be so much fun and it takes a minute to make. Enough time to do all the chores you have to do before you drop the kids for school. My son loves his smoothies as well and he makes it morning, noon and evening and everything in between.
I love the Kale-Cinnamon-Apple Smoothie. Neil Chomos, my personal trainer, got me hooked on this recipe. And I just love it. It’s one-two-three, and there I go. I now have a revitalizing energy booster to help my get through my day. I pour it into a travel cup and drink it on the go.
Why would this be a healthy smoothie? Kale is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients like Vitamin K. It contains little fat. It is an excellent source of Vitamin C and helps to lower cholesterol. Kale also contains numerous cancer-fighting substances and will also help you to lose weight. So, with all the benefits, it is my go-to option before I compete in a race or go to gym for a workout. Or if I do not have time for breakfast, I’d just make the smoothie.
To me it is important to use frozen bananas. I peel a few and store it in a container in the freezer. The frozen bananas I use in smoothies and banana bread. Use one frozen Banana, add a Granny Smith apple, chopped and remove the core. It is your choice to remove the peel, but because there are such a lot of fiber in the peel, I prefer adding it. Chopped kale leaves (325ml) and cut off the stems. Dates adds a bit of sweetness to the smoothie, so it’s your choice to add one, without the pits. For the smoothie to taste like apple pie add 5ml cinnamon powder. Try to use a healthy milk, I love using Cashew Milk. It is a healthier option; it’s packed with calcium and magnesium. Blend all together and pour into a glass or your travel mug and enjoy!
